The rehearsal is a time for exploration, to see how far you can take an idea, to capture, through the imagery of the language, every nuance and subtle shading of the piece in an exciting and imaginative way… Through this approach the form and shape of the piece will emerge, not from an objective an general viewpoint, but by making personal connections with the experience of the piece. If you use this as the basis for your rehearsal process, you will discover moves and accompanying action, some of which you will discard, but some you will keep because they serve to make the text clearer. You will discover moments and events and responses which will, when combined, communicate truthfully, creatively and coherently the life (sic) of the piece.

Remember, don’t think of the ‘rehearsal’ as the dictionary entry suggest – to ‘repeat out loud, to recreate, to recite, to recapitulate’. If you do, your audition will reflect this external and barren approach. Think of the rehearsal as meaning to experience anew, to feel again and more deeply than before, to clarify each thought more fully, to discover once again. This is the rehearsal, and indeed the actor’s process.
